The Finnish Roma Association participates the Roma Genocide Remembrance Initiative.
Dikh He Na Bister
Dikh He Na Bister (“Look and don’t forget” in Romani) is a week-long youth event organised yearly in Poland. Its main objective is to increase the knowledge of the Roma Genocide of the Second World War.
During the one-week camp Roma youth learn about the history of the Genocide, but also learn about contemporary themes that effect the Roma community such as the mechanisms of anti-gypsyism, increasing racism, hate speech, and the rise of the right-wing politics all across Europe. Participants will hear stories about the Roma Genocide directly from those who have survived or witnessed it. The week culminates to a visit to Auschwitz and to celebration of the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day in August 2nd.
The week-long event is organised by ternYpe International Roma Youth Network and its member and partner organisations, and the first event was held in 2010.
The Finnish Roma Association sends a group of Roma youth to Poland each year. The Association covers all their travel expenses, so that participating does not cause any extra costs to the participating Roma youths.
Those who have participated into the Dikh He Na Bister event previously can afterwards apply for the facilitator program where they can deepen their knowledge about the history of the Roma Genocide as well as train on how to teach what they have learned to their peers and thus spread the knowledge even wider. The facilitator education takes place in Krakow, Poland at the pedagogical university one week prior to the actual Dikh He Na Bister event.
The educated facilitators will keep lectures and workshops to the other participants at the actual youth event. Additionally, they have access to the wide, and constantly updated Dikh He Na Bister portal that they may use when searching and disseminating knowledge.
